I had a doctor’s appointment the other day and decided rather than get frustrated and angry when I was treated to the usual long wait after my time had passed, I would observe everyone else in the waiting room and see what came up. Now it wasn’t as funny as this video from the improv troupe Tricicle, but it was still pretty fascinating and I tucked away what I saw for future use in developing characters. There was a plethora of emotion, subtle interaction and body language playing itself out right before my eyes. It could easily have been turned into a song, a play, a scene, an unusual painting or a dance when sifted through an artist’s lens.
Somehow this is a lesson I have to keep teaching myself over and over in creative endeavors– pushing through, forcing something I’m doing to happen is seldom the best strategy. Sometimes you just have to relax and let the show happen.
